Buddhismone of the world’s most significant religions, is around 2560 years old. Buddhism has survived for so long partly because its essence is peace and love. People can achieve the essence of Buddhism in different ways. However, meditation can be considered as the most impotent vehicle for achieving the essence of Buddhism.

To achieve the essence of Buddhism, one must understand what it is. In fact, the essence of Buddhism is simply avoiding harming others and helping them as much as possible (Pg13. Bfb). To Buddhists, love and compassion are the most important human qualities. “Love” is the wish for everyone to have happiness (Pg27bfb). Love in Buddhism is different from normal love since normal love is an agitated passion in one’s heart and just for specific people. Love in Buddhism is an ultimate love which exists for every living being. In Buddhism, “Compassion” refers to the wish for everyone to be free from suffering (pg27bfb). People might think they do not need anyone to take pity on them, but this belief is wrong. Pity is a feeling people have when they feel superior to others, whereas Buddhism’s compassion is a wish for everyone to escape from suffering. According to this belief, everyone should try to help relieve the suffering of others. Meditation is the main method Buddhists use to achieve ultimate love and compassion.

The Four Noble Truths are also part of the essence of Buddhism (pg13bfb). The first one is the truth of suffering (pg13bfb). Living is suffering from Samsara. The reason we live is to pay for our karma in our last lives, which is the second truth: the cause of suffering. The third Noble Truth is the cessation of suffering and its cause, and the fourth one is the path to that cessation (pg12bfb). If even death can not cease our suffering since we will be reincarnated after we die, what can we do? We Meditate.

All meditation has the same goal: to help us to know ourselves deeply, and by knowing ourselves, to know others as well (pg75 Work as a spiritual practice). We have to know our own natures first in order to know others, who have the same nature. There by, knowing others, we can help them. Through meditation, anger and unsatisfaction will decrease and eventually disappear. One can also develop clairvoyance through meditate. However, feeling satisfied, controlling anger, and being clairvoyant is merely phenomena for achieving the only intention of mediation: to understand and abstract oneself into ultimate love. Meditation is not daydreaming or merely sitting in the correct posture and thinking about something. There are two general types of meditation: Samatha and Vipassana (loading…). Samatha is designed to lead to mind development and genuine mental tranquility. On the other hand, Vipassana is designed to give insight into the truths of impermanence, suffering and “self” (loading…). In this paper I will discuss only Vipassana since it produces the understanding which leads to enlightenment.

After understanding what the essence of Buddhism and Meditation is, we should focus on how to meditate. The first stage of meditating is to focus the mind because the focusing is the basis for us to think and decide. Though people’s minds are always distracted, people can still concentrate their minds by using their willpower to focus on the one thing which they want to understand most. Also, they can focus on anything, depending on their different situations. For example, if a person’s affliction comes from thinking too much, that person can meditate on the exhalation and inhalation of the breath. When one’s mind is focus on the breath, one’s ceaseless thoughts will immediately diminish (pg99howto).

Furthermore, it should be noticed that the concentrations should not be too tight or too loose. The two correct qualities of mind you need are “intense clarity” and “unwavering stability” (pg103howto). However, tightness and looseness can easily turn into “Laxity” and “Excitement”. In Laxity, the mind and body feel heavy. The Dalai Lama explains, “Laxity occurs when the mind is withdrawn inside in the process of developing meditation.” (pg104howto). In Excitement, the meditator forgets his or her focus and thinks about other things. Excitement is often due to lust and desire (pg105howto). Sleeping too much generally leads to Laxity, whereas having unrealistic expectations tends to lead to excitement (pg105howto). Thus, before meditating, we have to make sure our bodies are not too tired or not too excited; not too hungry or not too full. We need to keep our hearts calm and our minds sharp while we are meditating.

In the second stage of meditation, we have to realize we do not exist in ourselves and to view ourselves as illusions. There are two meanings for the term “self”. One is “living being”; the other one means “selflessness”. A “Living being” is a living being that loves and hates and also experience other feelings. “Selflessness” refers to a falsely imagined status of existence (pg126how). The first meaning involves the body, and the second involves the mind, or soul. Body and mind combine together constructed living beings. The Dalai Lama advises us, “To gain access to this dept of love and compassion, it is necessary first to understand that you yourself and other sentient beings are empty of inherent existence” (pg225howto). Before we do something, our minds order our bodies to do it. That is, we own our minds and bodies. We say to someone, “this is your mind and this is your body”. But where are “you”? Are “you” inside your body and mind or separate from them? The answer is that “you”, the controller of your body and mind, do exist; however, you exist in emptiness. Although “you” do exist, your existence is equal to nonsexist.

We can explain why we can see people and things and call their names as they are all like illusions. The one who controls the mind and body truly exist, but the body and mind are like illusions. The Dalai Lama explains “Remember a time when you mistook a reflection of a person in a mirror for an actual person. It appeared to be a person but was not. Similarly, all persons and things seem to exist from their own side without depending on causes and conditions, on their parts, and on thought, but they do not. In this way, persons and things are like illusions” (pg177howto). The Dalai Lama means that people and things all have their essence. Although their appearances are true, they are not the essences of people and things. As a result, we see them merely like illusions but not real illusions. We try to view everyone and everything like an illusion is because doing so helps us to reduce unfavorable emotions. Lust and hatred always hide what things really are. For instance, when we get angry, we think about how wretched the person who is making us angry; later however, when we calm down and look at the same person, we may find out we were wrong (pg178howto). We should look at people’s essences. Then we can diminish or eliminate our hatred and lust. Seeing things as inherently existent will impede us from loving and compassionating. In contrast, viewing others as illusions will maximize love and compassion.

The third and last stage of meditation involves absorbing oneself in ultimate love. After being focused on meditating about how things are empty and not what they are, we can understand how we are unnecessarily drawn into suffering and pain by false appearances. We then fall prey to lust and hatred (pg224howto). As a result, we accumulate different kinds of karma, and suffer from the Four Noble Truths forever. In contrast, through meditation, we can realize that everything we have done was totally unnecessary. We regret and change. We turn ourselves into love and compassion.

In conclusion, eventually, we can achieve the essence of Buddhism by meditation. Although it might not be the only way to this essence, it is the most important way.  To end the eternal circle of suffering, one must understand through meditation that everything he or she sees is only an illusion. The only thing that exists is the soul, and it, also, is emptiness. Through meditation, we can fulfill ourselves by forgiving hatred and achieving ultimate love and compassion.

这是我们LISTER CENTRE(一个学生住宅区)组织的“游戏”。
